Many of us are inspired to keep marine life for its exotic beauty or interesting behavior. But if we’re being perfectly honest, we have to admit there’s also something intriguing about keeping—and displaying to our friends and family—marine organisms that have dangerous or potentially deadly defense mechanisms, such as venomous spines, potent toxins, or razor-sharp teeth.

For those hobbyists who like to flirt with danger, the marine aquarium trade certainly offers its share of prickly and poisonous characters—from venomous fishes to deadly cephalopods to noxious sessile invertebrates. There are even organisms we can buy that offer stunning beauty and potency in equal measure.

Among these best-of-both-worlds critters are many of the zoanthids we’re so fond of keeping in our reef systems. These polyps (most of the ones we keep being from the Zoanthus and Palythoa genera) have much to recommend them, being very hardy and often stunningly beautiful. But some of them also contain a potent neurotoxin, called palytoxin, in their tissues and mucus that can make people very sick or even cause death if they’re not handled properly.

Of course, blithely mentioning that certain popular zoanthids have the potential to sicken or kill people raises a whole host of questions that demand prompt, thorough answers. Among them:

  • What is the nature of palytoxin?
  • How dangerous is it?
  • By what pathways can it enter the body?
  • In which species is it found?
  • How can we avoid exposure to palytoxin?
  • If some zoanthids are dangerous, should we even buy them for our tanks?

Rather than attempt to answer these critical questions in a written post, Caribbean Chris and I thought it might be more impactful to share with you a presentation that was given by Julian Sprung at Reef-A-Palooza Orlando 2015 and filmed by our friend Ryan Michaels at Riley’s Reef (see below).

Sprung just gave the same talk at MACNA 2015 in Washington, DC, and CC and I both found it very informative and enlightening. In fact, I’d say the insights and experiences that Sprung discussed in his presentation gave us a whole new perspective on zoanthids and respect for their toxic potential.

  2. I’m very curious as to what caused the mucus production by the palythoa mentioned. It must have been fine prior to it being moved as it came from an older established tank. Mr. Sprung even mentions that he was aware of it but hadn’t seen it for some time. Unless the tank was just zoa’s and paly’s then the original tank would have gone critical like the other tanks the paly was placed in. This makes me think that the mucus production was a defense mechanism that occurred when it was disturbed. How many times have each of us moved a frag or colony because we thought it would look better elsewhere. As Benjamin Franklin wrote: “A word to the wise is sufficient”. I for one will will that Mr. Sprungs word to heart.

    • I suspect you’re right that the paly’s mucus production was a defensive/protective response to being handled and moved around. Also, I had the same thought that you did when listening to this presentation at MACNA–all the times I’d handled or moved paly or zoa colonies without giving it much thought. You can bet I’ll be more mindful now!
